Durable Automotive Plastics Circularity Workshop

August 05, 2024

Pull-A-Part’s Senior Vice President, Derick Corbett, was honored to be invited to present at the Durable Automotive Plastics Circularity (DAPC) Workshop.  Aggressive climate policy and fuel efficiency goals are driving automotive manufacturers to seek out new technologies, like vehicle electrification.  A direct result of this initiative is cars and trucks are getting lighter. The makeup of a car has significantly changed to include a greater amount of durable plastic components as replacements for metal. The challenge, most automotive plastic materials are difficult to separate at end-of-life for reuse or recycling, making most parts of end-of-life vehicles unrecyclable. Our challenge is to find technologies and processes that will ensure these automotive materials stay out of the landfill at end of life. Pull-A-Part was able to provide insight for scientists ranging from the US Department of Energy to automotive manufacturers and more about how the vehicle end-of-life process works and the specific obstacles that must be overcome to establish a circular supply chain for plastics. Pull-A-Part thanks the Oak Ridge National Lab for their leadership in this space and for including Pull-A-Part in this endeavor.
